geography

The geography attribute specifies a resource used to determine the area covered by a map. Its value is the name of a resource file in the OCS Resources which contains a "map metrics" resource. The map metrics resource defines the origin (the southwest corner) and the extent (the northeast corner) of the map in lat/lon coordinates.

Supporting Tags

The geography attribute is supported by the <map> tag. A <geography> tag may be provided within the <map> as an alternative to the geography attribute. If the geography attribute and the <geography> tag are both omitted, the map metrics defined in the "Oklahoma Maps" resource file is used.

Examples

<map geography="Oklahoma Maps">

<map geography="Kansas Maps">

<map geography="ARM Network">

Notes

The geography attribute was the original mechanism for defining the area of a map. The <geography> tag was introduced in a subsequent version of WxML to provide more flexibility when defining map areas. When both are specified, the <geography> tag takes precedence over the geography attribute. Although both methods are currently supported in WxML for convenience, it is likely that one or both of them could be obsoleted in future versions in support of an improved mechanism.

A map metrics resource may be included in any file in the OCS Resources folder. The following files in the standard software distribution include map metrics for commonly used map areas.
