position

The position attribute defines the position of an observation plot label relative to its lat/lon position on the map. This attribute allows multiple observation plots to be combined to produce a standard meteorological "station model" around a site. The value of the position attribute should be an integer representing one several predefined positions around the site.

Supporting Tags

The position attribute is supported by the <observation> tag. The default value is "0".

Examples

<observation position="0">

<observation position="6">

<observation position="18">

Notes

Position attribute values roughly correspond to the hours on a clock, with a few extra values added to allow for precise alignment of multiple observations. The supported values are listed and illustrated below.

The relative placement of these positions is illustrated below.

Some of the positions overlap with others, and in these cases you will want to avoid using them together even though nothing in WxML prohibits you from doing so. The following examples illustrate how multiple observation plots at different positions can be combined to produce well-balanced station models.
